India claims that Pakistan is building over 200 bunkers and embankments across the Kashmir border despite the ongoing ceasefire with India, according to the BSF. The BSF would take up the matter with Pakistan during border meetings between the two countries.
It is claimed that Pakistani rangers are building around 200 bunkers, 102 concrete bunkers, 30 new border posts and 78 observation towers along the relatively quiet international border, for strengthening the country’s defences.
However, the structures are within 70 metres of zero line and few concrete bunkers overlook the fence like that at BSF’s Nikowal border observation post. The towers allow Pakistani Rangers to closely monitor India’s forward positions and troop movement.
Border Security Forces of India Director General A K Mitra, said that India referred it to the Survey Commission to demarcate the borders but Pakistan is not yet prepared for the survey. Because once the survey is done, it will be clear as to who has encroached the area.
However, Mitra asserted that there has been a decline in infiltration, but an increase in violent incidents in the valley.
India has acquired hand-held thermal imagers (HHTIS) for surveillance around the border, which are effective during day and night and in any climatic conditions.
It is high time, both the countries resolved the matter with bilateral talks and relied less on strengthening their defences.
